I was chosen to be a training coordinator for the club. I felt shocked at first, but it is now ok for me. I know who I am and what my real goal is in the future. I will try my best to be a good club member and fulfill my role as expected and at the same time obtain some benefits for myself in terms of writing skills. I hope all members try their best to make this club one of the most famous journalism clubs in the town.

Lybunnarith Hong, Media Officer

It was such a great honor and pleasure for me to be one of American Intercon Journalism Club members. Hardly have I ever been interested in writing before since I thought it wasn’t the most essential thing in academic study and not surprisingly it seemed tedious to me which is also one of the main reasons why I sometimes fell asleep in writing sessions. Nevertheless, after I had become this group’s member, I feel a sense of understanding in writing and it gives me a huge inspiration to be a great writer in the future. In addition, it obviously provides me a worth-taking opportunity to cooperate and work with other students in order to produce a piece of work.

Saving The Pandas

By KEV PHIM

The giant pandas live in a few mountain ranges in central China. Based on a record, most of the pandas survive in Sichuan, Shaanxi and Gansu provinces. Conservation centers and zoos around the world are working to ensure that pandas survive at whatever the cost. Why is panda so special? With its black-and-white coloring, cuddly shape, and sad-looking face, the giant panda is a precious animal to people. Aside from their cuteness, pandas are extremely rare.

The low birth rate is really a main reason. When a cub was born, we have to take care of the cub carefully. If we are a bit careless, it would die at any time. Taking care of a panda isn’t easy. It needs the best doctor, keeper and a variety of toys to play with. This level of care costs million dollars every year. The loss of bamboo forest where they live and eat is also a big problem. The natural disasters affect the panda’s home and life. This is one of the big problems that pandas face.

To restore the dwindling number of pandas, we have to restore their homes and their food. Planting more bamboo forest would be a big plus. The care services are also important. Mother pandas that have just given birth to the cubs need much care. The cute black-and-white pandas will soon become extinct if we don’t start taking care of them well.

“If You Can’t Say It, Facebook It!”

By LYBUNNARITH HONG

Internet has no doubt become one of the most important innovations when it comes to the quest of knowledge, entertainment, culture and communications. People across the globe from children to grandparents can interact with each other easily these days. It is because of many websites created to help people to socially establish their network online. Not surprisingly, Facebook is one of the world’s most popular social networks. The popularity of Facebook has been increasing so much that soon it will reach 1 billion members. However, the question about whether Facebook is worth using or wasting our valuable time has been discussed in many countries.

Mark Zuckerberg first introduced Facebook in 2004 and since then Facebook gradually became the top social networking site in the web making its owner the youngest ever billionaire in the history. Most people who know how to use the computer and internet has a Facebook account. With its 900+ million active users, Facebook has helped a lot of people in many ways.

Facebook is a tool of communication. With Facebook, you can get in touch easily with your friends, colleagues, relatives and family. Facebook is best for searching for old buddies, especially when a friend goes far away to another place, and often don’t get a chance to communicate with them. Facebook gives us the opportunity to communicate with new people from different social status and countries. It is a great opportunity to learn new cultures which you may find fascinating.

Another great advantage of Facebook is that it can help your business. Since it is mostly open to the world (online network), you can connect with other people who might be interested in products or services you advertised on Facebook and possibly making a significant increase in your business success. Moreover, using a Facebook fan page may increase your brand value and social media presence. Facebook helps you find new clients and good revenues if you know how to use the site properly.

Facebook is a suitable place in which we can share our feelings and thoughts on what’s happening around in our daily lives. We can also get feedbacks or comments from our friends to cheer us up if we face any dilemmas which we can’t solve by ourselves. Students can use Facebook for group study by creating a group for their study group.

On the other hand, Facebook also has some drawbacks which should be noticed. Nowadays, it seems that more and more people spend their time in front of the computer screens, particularly using Facebook, which according to doctors, can be very unhealthy for them. Obviously, Facebook can be very addictive for some people who are too enthusiastic. Thus, it wastes their precious time that can be used to do something more beneficial like playing sports, reading books or spending time with their family instead of sitting there hours and hours chatting and commenting with their friends. Above all, Facebook has a very bad influence on students’ exam results. A research carried out by an expert in psychology said that when students focus too much on Facebook, they tend to get lower scores in exams, thereby losing their motivation to study.

Another serious problem is having a fake Facebook profile. Consider how easy it is to create a fake profile; it can have a very bad impact on a victim’s life (person who has been faked). It may not sound serious for most Facebook users, but there are people who committed suicide because someone with a fake Facebook profile account has abused them using their own personal information against them. Most importantly, there are plenty of groups or fan pages which have been created in order to criticize other religion, personalities and nations. Unless Facebook administrators take actions against them, I suppose Facebook will lose its popularity soon due to these kinds of ridiculous activities.

Facebook can be a powerful tool of business and communication if it is used well. We can see that it has a lot of advantages and disadvantages. Hence, in order to save our valuable time, we should use it in moderation.

Bullying: Anytime, Anywhere To Anyone…

By SEIVCHHOUNG SOK

We are actually living in a society where bullies and bullying exists. It happens anytime and anywhere to anyone. It is most likely that there are bullies in different institutions such as schools, workplaces, churches, etc. However, the number of bullying cases at school is highest. Question remains, why are there bullies at school and what can we do to prevent it?

Bullying at school is probably caused by individuals or a group of students who shows dominance and physical strength and who are most likely considered as punks and gangsters within the school premises. They try to get the advantages from the isolated or underprivileged students whose characteristics are not strong and brave enough to fight back. Bullies would cause fear, terror and violence to the victims such as: physical pain, emotional violence and so on. Often, they start bullying by threatening their victims through their emotions prior to the physical hurt. They try to taunt and tease them or perhaps mock them by using such very bad words. In addition, they might have insulted their victims’ ancestors, too. Besides these, they are likely to abuse them by pulling their hair, fighting them cruelly, pinching them, etc. Not often, if the bullies play quite severe, it might result in a homicide. Thus, those bullies will be called to trial by the allegation of the victims’ relatives, friends and witnesses and possibly put them behind bars. These have been complained by parents of the victims’ and are likely to punish those who commit such crime—bullying their beloved children.

To solve this problem, we have to engage parents and youth together. It is important for everyone in the community to work together to send a unified message against bullying. So, we have to launch an awareness campaign to make the objectives known to the schools, parents, and community members. Schools should try to contact parents to inform them of the conditions and attitudes of their children towards everyone at schools. The parents must cooperate with the school and they should try on their own to indentify the misbehaviors of their children and educate them more at home in order for them not to become one of the bullies. By following this step, parents are able to know how their children react and search for ways to seize their mind of not joining those bullies who are criticized, disliked and ridiculed by the school community and the society as a whole.

School owners, managers, principals and directors have to build a safe environment in the school by creating school policies, rules or disciplines. They have to deal with those bullies by making school policies which are to cease aggressive and violent behaviors and abuses to those weak victims who suffer and experience poor treatment. It is possible that the number of bullies will decrease day by day. If students break any of the school rules or disciplines, they will be punished or expelled by the school principal or the academic board. Punished, rehabilitated or sent to correctional facilities, bullies will be put into shame or perhaps become more aware of their misbehaviors and bullying mistakes.

We have to deny being motivated by the bullies who are surrounding us. Therefore, we have to reconsider about the impacts of bullying and avoid being involved in bullying other people. I believed that everyone is equal, so we have to be fair with other people and not to violate their rights. As a result, we will find our classes with no signs of violence, but instead it’s full of joy and comfort.

Olympics And Paralympics 2012

By SOKPHAYOUTH CHHENG

Olympic and Paralympic Games 2012 were held in London, England. What are the reasons for their strong appeal to people from so many different cultures and backgrounds?

Olympic Games is the world’s foremost sports competition and major international event featuring summer and winter sports in which thousands of athletes from more than 200 countries participate in hundreds of sports. It’s a game where each competitor of every nation has a chance to show outstanding performance and ability to the world.

Every nation also tries to show off by winning as many medals as they can. If we look back in the past, the United States of America and Russia were the two top nations who dominated the game and challenged each other to win the title as the first top nation with the most medals.

Nowadays it is completely different. China as the host of Olympic Games 2008 is one of the most serious and dangerous challenger for the United States because they shocked the world being the first place in the Olympic Games 2008 and broke many new world records.

In Olympic Games 2012, USA team won first place while China tried their best and won second place. Top five countries that won medals the most were: USA with 104 medals (46 gold medals), China with 88 medals (38 gold medals), Russia with 82 medals (24 gold medals), Great Britain with 65 medals (29 gold medals) and Germany with 44 medals (11 gold medals).

USA team is still the best team and they broke many new records in different sports such as swimming, basketball, women’s football and so on. Even though Jamaica does not rank in top ten, but their athletes also broke many records that the word should be aware of. Jamaican team broke a new record in running 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m and 1200m in team and individual.

Paralympic Games is the world’s second biggest international multi-sports event, involving athletes with a range of physical disabilities, including mobility disabilities, amputations, blindness and cerebral palsy. It is being held in England and China is on the top of the list of nations who received the most medals.

How Sports Help Teenagers’ Health

By CHHOU CHIBOU

Sports are important to the growth and development of a teenager’s mind and body, reducing risk of obesity and other serious health complications.

Obesity is one of the biggest problems faced by many teenagers. It can make them have health complications including diabetes, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and asthma, along with mental health ailments such as depression and anxiety. To avoid these problems, playing sports is highly recommended because it helps teenagers maintain a healthier weight and boosts their cardiovascular system, lowers their blood pressure, improves their mood and helps them make healthier choices in life.

Playing sports not only builds your fitness, but it also keeps your mind sharp, boosts your brain power and enlarges your brain’s basal ganglia (the part that helps you pay attention), which can help you do better at school, be more flexible and improve your problem-solving skills. Some researches indicate that playing sports regularly can stimulate new cell growth in the brain and increase mental abilities from 20% to 30%. It also helps you sleep better, feel more energetic and less stressed.

Sports improve teenagers’ mental health and energy level, ease tension and offer a healthy lifestyle. Let’s come and play sports together!

Save Our Earth From Global Warming

By MENGTEK LY

The weather is getting hotter and hotter and it is because of the global warming usually caused by pollution, so we must find ways to reduce it.

We should start planting more trees in order to reduce pollution and also global warming. Trees can absorb carbon dioxide and release oxygen. They are the integral part of the natural atmospheric exchange cycle on the earth. A single tree can absorb one ton of carbon dioxide during its lifetime.

We also can save it by reducing, reusing, and recycling. Whenever we go shopping, we should buy the materials which can be reused and recycled such as paper, plastic, newspaper, glass and aluminum cans. We should have a recycling program in our home or school. If there isn’t a recycling program at home or school, we should make a request to our parents or head teachers. It is also a good way to reduce the carbon dioxide.

We should drive less and drive smart. Less driving can reduce the emissions which get out from our vehicles. Besides saving gasoline, walking and biking are good forms of exercise, too. We can take public transportation to school if we are lazy to walk or bike. If we want to drive our own vehicle, we must make sure that our car is running efficiently. For example, keeping our tires properly inflated can improve our gas mileage by more than 2-3 percents. The gas which we save not only helps our budget, but also keeps some of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere.

To make our environment cleaner and more beautiful, take your stand.

Reason Why I Study at American Intercon Institute

By YOU MUY

American Intercon Institute
American Intercon Institute is a great school. My friends suggested me this school when I asked them to recommend me a good school. Like most of the schools, I took the placement test. I was asked to meet a teacher to have an oral interview. After that, he told me I got level 7 for my result.

I have learnt a lot from this school. I used to study with many great teachers. They all have their own unique teaching skills to make the class interesting. I have adapted to the environment where I have to speak English all the time. The school also has a lot of contests and events which I can participate, learn and have fun at the same time. I have achieved a lot of things as being elected as a class monitor, passing the scholarship exam and receiving the highest score in the major presentation. I was also elected as the President of the American Intercon Journalism Club.

I would not have achieved all these if the school didn’t give me the opportunity to prove myself. I did not know I can do all of that, not until I was given the chance and I grabbed it and made the most out of it. There might be students who have not figured out what they are good at. What they have to do is to try new things, work with new people. I have learnt that failure is just the first level ahead of success. What is bad about failure is that people give it a bad impression. What really matters is how we think of it. I make mistakes all the time. I am a slow learner and I have made a lot of mistake before I can get one thing right. That is how I achieve all of my goals.

One thing I like about the school is that I am used to the surrounding of having security staff everywhere. Every time I need something, I can ask them for help. This is a good way to interact with people. When I was younger, I will not talk to strangers. I am more like an introvert, but now I am not afraid of them. I know that they can help me. They can direct me to the right department when I am lost.
